Shrine of Římov

In the mid-17th century, during the Thirty Years’ War, a pilgrimage site was established in the then small hamlet of Římov in South Bohemia. Its founder was the Jesuit Jan Gurre, who built 25 chapels around Římov commemorating the Passion of Jesus in Jerusalem based on (his) visions of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary.

At the same time, he had a Loreto chapel built – an exact replica of the house of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth which was transferred to Italy and is venerated in Loreto, Italy.

Pilgrims’ House and Rectory

In 1699 a Pilgrims’ House was built by the Jesuits in Římov. After the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the building continued to serve as a pilgrims’ inn and from 1830 it was used as a rectory, school, and rental house, gradually falling into disrepair. In 2022 this severely dilapidated historic building steeped in history was purchased  by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.

Reconstruction Project

The aim of the rectory’s restoration is to return the building to its original purpose so that it can continue to serve as the center of the parish and the pilgrimage site. We want a priestly community to live here with facilities for pilgrims and parishioners, while also serving as a center for the missionary work of the FSSP and the Římov parish, which was entrusted to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter by the Diocese of České Budějovice in 2019.
